Oliver Chong > 2008.07.04 - Day 83 :

We considered going to Boston to see the fireworks along the Charles river, but that would have been incredibly hectic and would have made for a long trip back home. Instead we went to Lowell and watched the fireworks at the Merrimack river. We are positioned probably about a half mile down the river from where they are being launched. It was a pretty nice display that went on for about 20~25 minutes.

This is one of my favorites because it not only has some of the aerial shells, but the fountains as well. I got quite a few shots that I am happy with. Enough to make a gallery with I think.

Unfortunately, leaving the field where we were parked my car was hit. My poor Rav4, not a scratch on it until now. That put a damper on the night. Oh well, insurance will work it out and I will get a new bumper.

Irene and I are spending the Memorial Day weekend near Portland, ME at a bed and breakfast. After checking in we made our way out to visit some of the lighthouses and the Old Port district of Portland.

This is Portland Head Light which is located in Cape Elizabeth, ME. It has the distinction of being called the "Most photographed light house in North America." It was certainly the most busy lighthouse I have ever visited and it is by far the most photogenic I have seen. Getting to a good location to photograph from isn't a challenge at all.

I took multiple exposures thinking I might do an HDR, but after seeing the images on my computer I decided on just the single exposure.
Oliver Chong > 2008.04.14 - Day 2 :

I tried this shot with and without the hands. With the hands is far more compelling and greatly helps to balance the fact that almost everything else in the scene is on the gray scale. The picture was taken at 10mm for the distortion effect which i actually hoped there to be more of.

P.S. triggering the shutter with your foot isn't the easiest thing to do...
Oliver Chong > 2008.09.15 - Day ? :

Sometimes the sky looks amazing at night. Storm clouds were leaving the area on the night of the full moon producing this scene.

Not an HDR.

Saturday on the Cape had us split in to two groups. Irene and I couldn't bike with our friends so we went out for a drive around the neighboring towns and beaches. We stopped at Cape Cod Light, Wellfleet, and a few beaches.

The beach where this was taken was completely quiet save for two people having lunch looking out at the water at the top of the cliff and a gentleman who was photographing the scenery. I said hello and spoke with him for just a minute as he was packing up to leave. He was shooting with a 4x5 large format camera that looked as though it must have been well over 50 years old.

There are quite a few pictures I like from this day, but everything came together in this shot to make it one of my favorites from the trip.
Oliver Chong > 2008.05.18 - Day 36 :

We went for a walk today at the Lime Quarry Reservation just 2 minutes down the street from where I live. It was a lime quarry from around 1736 and operated for about 100 years.

I have jogged in to it a few times, but not very far. We walked the longest trail and found out it is much larger than we originally thought.

Just by chance i managed to see this toad a foot or so off the path. It is probably the largest toad I have ever seen in MA. I did some research on toads in the area and I believe it is a Fowler's Toad, but it could be an American Toad. We also saw many chipmunks and a few different birds. Next time I visit I plan to look at the side trails and see if any lead to the areas where the quarrying occurred.
Oliver Chong > 2008.04.20 - Day 8 :

The magnolia bush at the entrance to my apartment complex bloomed and since I missed taking a picture of its flowers last year I had to take one this time around.

Valentine's Day tulips.

You could tell that flower sales were down this year because of the relatively large discounts the online stores were offering. Unfortunately, shipping always kills the deal. Especially when Valentine's Day falls on a weekend. I always choose to purchase local anyways.

Winter weather strikes again!
This is why I stayed home today. It started off snowing heavily in the morning and since noon it has switched to sleet and freezing rain.
